I own land in Florida.

That sentence sounds as though it should be followed by a grand plan involving a house, palm trees and a life in the sunshine.

It isn’t.

I have no particular desire to build on it.

I love my life in Europe

This is the biggest reason, and it is not a spreadsheet answer.

I love my life in Europe. My routines, travel, family, work and property projects are here. Building a house in Florida simply because I happen to own land there would turn an asset into an obligation I did not ask for.

Florida may be exactly right for somebody else. It just isn’t the life I want to build at the moment.

Part of the reason is completely irrational

Crocodile warning signs in the Keys did not help. Neither did stories about sharks farther up the coast. I have watched *Jaws* far too many times for someone who likes being near water.

I know millions of people live in Florida without being eaten. This is not investment analysis. It is simply me. 😂

Ownership creates possibilities, not duties

Development would mean surveys, permissions, design decisions, contractors, construction risk, insurance, maintenance and ongoing attention from Europe.

The question is not only whether I could build. It is whether I want the life, cost and responsibility that the finished property would create.

Right now, I don’t.

I used to think property naturally moved through a sequence: buy, improve, use, sell. Now I ask a more useful question:

**What job is this property supposed to do for me?**

Holding the land while I decide is a strategy. Selling it eventually is also a strategy. What I do not want is to spend money solving a problem I do not have.

The lesson I carried forward

Do not develop a property just to prove that owning it was a good decision. First decide whether the project fits the life you actually want.

The same thinking sits behind the Spain Property Buyer Toolkit: understand the purpose, test the numbers and include the exit before possibility turns into obligation.

If I ever sell the Florida land, the practical questions are a separate story: Can You Sell Florida Property While Living Abroad?.
