The challenge is simple to explain.
Can I find a farm for around 50k before I turn 50?
That is my **50×50 Challenge**.
I want to own a farm and celebrate my 50th birthday there in December 2027.
One budget. One birthday. A very big dream.
And, knowing me, probably quite a few unexpected detours along the way. 😂
Why a farm?
For me, a farm is not simply another property.
It represents space, freedom and the chance to build a life that feels more connected to nature. I want enough usable land to grow things, keep some animals and create something meaningful.
Maybe it eventually becomes part home, part project and part income-producing idea.
Maybe the final version looks completely different from the one currently in my head.
That is part of the challenge too.
Why 50k?
Because a goal becomes more interesting when it has limits.
Without a budget, I could spend hours admiring beautiful farms that have absolutely nothing to do with the life I can realistically build.
Around 50k forces me to look differently.
It means considering different countries, smaller properties, renovation projects and places other buyers might overlook.
But the advertised price is only the beginning.
Taxes, legal checks, access, water, utilities and renovation can turn an apparently cheap farm into a very expensive mistake.
So the challenge is not merely to find a listing near 50k.
It is to find something I can legally buy, realistically improve and actually use for the life I have in mind.
And why before 50?
Because December 2027 gives the dream a deadline.
I like goals I can work towards. A date turns “one day” into decisions I need to start making now.
But the deadline is motivation—not permission to panic-buy.
If I have learned anything from property, it is that excitement should begin the investigation, not end it.
I would rather reach 50 still searching than celebrate on a farm I bought only because the clock was ticking.
What counts as a real possibility?
A beautiful photograph is not enough.
For a property to stay on my list, I need to understand:
- what I am legally buying;
- whether the building can actually be lived in;
- whether the land is usable;
- whether access, water and services work;
- what I am allowed to renovate or create;
- what the complete cost could become; and
- whether the property supports the life I want rather than creating another obligation I never asked for.
The country may change.
The size may change.
Even my definition of the perfect farm may change as I learn more.
The goal can evolve without disappearing.
This is the journey
Farm by 50 is where I will share the searches, property visits, legal surprises, numbers, near-misses and lessons.
Some properties will be tempting.
Some will be completely unrealistic.
Some may look impossible until I investigate them.
And some may look perfect until I ask one more question.
That last question is often where the useful story begins.
The lesson I am already learning
A deadline should make your due diligence sharper—not weaker.
The 50×50 Challenge gives me a reason to keep looking, but it does not change what a property must prove before I buy it.
Can I find a farm for around 50k before I turn 50?
I genuinely do not know yet.
But now the challenge has a name.
And the search is officially on. 🌱
